from Ugly Duckling to Swan

Lovers and experts of Opera tell that Maria Callas had a great voice, and her dramatic performance on the stages was one of the best. She is one of the iconic artists who come first on my mind when I think of Opera.

Franco Zeffirelli's film, "Callas Forever", with Fanny Ardant on the role of Callas, shows her latest years of life. She lived recluse after voice problems and heartbroken with the end of a big love affair. It also shows what people generally told about a side of her, such as, she owned a big ego, she was perfectionist, and temper too.

Callas was not happy with her physical appearance before. She was fat and considered her image ugly. Even her mother, since her childhood, bullied her making comparisions with her beautiful sister, besides being very demanding and oppressive with Callas. It was a complex relation of mother and daughter. But Callas shaped her body and it did not last to become herself in icon of elegance and beauty.

She loved to sing. And singing was the aid she found to overcome the loneliness, the ugliness and the lack of affection. Fortunately, she owned a versatile and powerful voice.

Although she expressed strength, confidence and pride of herself, it seems maybe that opposite feelings were hidden. The past situations may have diminished her self estime. So, she possibly acrossed life evoking a self-centred manner, as a self protection in order to react against rejections and disappointments. She was also fighting to reach perfection, so then to feel beloved.

At the end, the challenges faced, plus her discipline, pushed her to get achievements in a successful career, and made her a special artist.

Aged 53, her broken heart stopped working.
