Shakespeare's Advices

William Shakespeare started to write the play ''Hamlet' in 1600, and the story of tragedy and plot to seize power is set in the Denmark Kingdon, where Hamlet is a Prince who wishes to avenge the death of his father who was murdered by his brother Claudius with the purpose to become the King, and then marry to Gertrude, Hamlet's mother. Claudio's chief counselor, Polonius, father of Ophelia, the woman with whom Hamlet promised to marry, is despised by Hamlet and is seen as a big fool at the court. Nevertheless, Shakespeare surprises the readers when reveals a hidden wise side of Polonius, when he put the following words into the mouth of Polonius to advise his son Laerte who is heading off to France. Those advices may be valuable in the current days yet.

- Don't say what you're thinking, and don't be too quick to act on what you think

- Be friendly to people but don't overdo it

- Once you've tested out your friends and found them trustworthy, hold onto them. But don't waste your time shaking hands with every new guy you meet

- Don't be quick to pick a fight, but once you're in one, hold your own

- Listen to many people, but talk to few

- Wear clothes according to your income, without ever being extravagant

- Don't borrow money and don't lend it, since when you lend to a friend, you often lose the friendship as well as the money, and borrowing turns a person into a spendthrift

- Be true to yourself. Then you won't be false to anybody else
